Leading Indian women in sports : Geeta Phogat wins a bronze at Senior Asian Wrestling championship
This year Indian female sportspersons have outperformed men in most sports and the recent woman to join the list of these achievers is wrestler Geeta Phogat. At the Senior Asian Wrestling championship in Doha, Phogat won a bronze medal in the Women’s Freestyle 58kg category, where our male representative, Hitendar Beniwal, unfortunately lost.
Defeating Vietnam’s Thi Loan Nyguen by Fall verdict in the bronze medal play-off, Phogat later lagged behind Kaori Icho of Japan, who is a Olympic gold medallist. Her victory is even more impressive because this was her first time after her injury lay-off. Here she won her first match against Salomat Kuchimova of Uzbekistan by fall (11-0), followed by a successful match against Ting Zhang Zhou of China (6-4.) According to a report by the Economic Times, Phogat earned five classification points in the match and also came out with four technical points.
While both Hitender and Geeta made it to the bronze-medal play-off, Geeta was the only one to change it into a win as Hitender lost to Kazakhstan’s Aiaal Lazarev (who won five classification points and eight technical points). Other players who participated in the tournament but failed to reach the advance levels were Rahul Balasaheb Aware (57kg), Rajneesh Dalal (65kg) and Somveer (86kg).
After women like Saina Nehewal, Sania Mirza, MC Mary Kom and the Indian women’s Kabaddi team, among others; Geeta Phogat continues to prove that Indian women are just as good, and in the recent past have even performed better than their male counterparts. We hope Geeta continues to perform well and inspire other girls in India to take up the sport.
