Venkatamma allegedly killed her daughter Rajeshwari with an iron rod. She was very angry with her daughter after she found out that she had been involved with a boy in Chinnapura, the village which they come from.

Kolar Superintendent of Police Rohini Katoch Sepat told IANS that the accused has confessed to her crime. Her daughter had apparently failed her exams, and her mother got to know of her affair from other people in the locality.

Venkatamma has been sent to judicial custody. Her husband had passed away when she was only seven months old. She brought up her three children -- two girls and a boy -- by working as a coolie.

Just this week, a 29-year-old woman was arrested for murdering her two twin baby girls. She admitted to the crime, saying that she had a bitter experience with her first child who was a girl. Her husband and his family were not happy with the fact that the baby was a girl, and she expected the same treatment from them for the new twins.

According to Cheryl L. Meyer and Michelle Oberman, authors of the book Mothers Who Kill Their Children: Understanding the Acts of Moms from Susan Smith to the "Prom Mom, "Neonaticidal behaviour is often influenced by relatively intangible factors, such as emotional isolation and perceived lack of resources."
