Son, Daughter-In-Law Harass Kannada Actor Over Property Dispute

67-year-old actor B Shyamala Devi has claimed that her son Nitin S Goudactor and daughter-in-law Smitha have been harassing her in an effort to obtain the rights to her possessions.

Veteran Kannada actor B Shyamala Devi, 67, has reported her son and daughter-in-law to the police on charges of torturing and harassing her about property disputes.

The complaint was made on June 20 at the Basavanagudi women's police station in south Bengaluru by Shyamala Devi, actor and late Siddalingaiah's wife, whose films include "Bangarada Manushya," one of the most renowned Kannada films ever.

The senior actor, who acted in supporting roles in films, said in the complaint that she has been harassed by her son Nitin S Gouda and daughter-in-law Smitha Gouda in an effort to obtain the rights to assets registered in her name.

Kannada Actor Shyamala Devi Harassed When She Denied To Transfer Her Possessions 

Devi was allegedly subjected to assault multiple times between 2018 and 2023 because she refused to transfer her possessions into their names, according to the police complaint. She claims that her son, who used a credit card to pay for her medical care, has been requesting its payback.

When she sent them a legal notice requesting them to leave the residence where they share a home, the pair allegedly assaulted her and threatened her with terrible repercussions.

According to authorities, the Basavanagudi police have opened a complaint and are looking into the situation.

The Kannada film legend Dr Rajkumar is featured in Bangarada Manushya, which Siddalingaiah, the spouse of Shyamala Devi, directed.

Study Reveals The Accelerating Rate Of Oppression Of Elderly Women By Their Sons

In a study titled "Women & Ageing: Invisible or Empowered?" that was released by HelpAge India on the UN-recognized "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day," 7,911 women between the ages of 60 and 90 were polled over the course of a month in May and June. Elderly women from urban and rural areas of India, representing 20 states and two Union Territories, comprised the study's respondents, who represented a range of socioeconomic statuses.

According to the study, 16% of elderly women reported experiencing abuse. Of them, 50% claimed to have been subjected to physical violence, 46% to verbal abuse, and 40% to emotional abuse.
