The latest sensation in women’s cricket, Mumbai’s Jemimah Rodrigues, is playing for Supernovas in the Women’s T20 Challenge, Jaipur. The 18-year-old Rodrigues, who made headlines in 2017 by scoring 202 in an Under-19 One-day tournament, on Thursday night, batted brilliantly. She scored an unbeaten 77 off just 48 balls, leading the Supernovas to victory, by defeating Velocity by 12 runs and entering the final of the Women’s T20 Challenge.

Rodrigues is one of the rising superstars of women’s cricket as she played one of the finest innings of her career so far. Numbering around 7,000, the crowd cheered for the sensational batter and her knock was absolutely brilliant.

She easily outshone her more seasoned partners, such as Mithali Raj (39 not out) and Veda Krishnamuthy (21 not out) plus some of the big hitters like Supernovas’ Sophie Devine who holds the record for the fastest fifty in women’s T20I.

Last year Rodrigues was selected in the ODI squad for India Women’s Tour to South Africa.

The teenager remained unbeaten by scoring a blazing knock of 202 runs off 163 balls in an Under-19 One-day tournament in November last year.

Earlier, she was also a part of India A team’s limited-overs home series against Bangladesh. The Mumbai all-rounder will have to work hard to secure a permanent place in the Indian Squad.

Jemimah is the second woman after Smriti Mandhana to score a double-hundred in 50-over cricket.

She received the honour at this young age because of her excellent run in the domestic season. Moreover, she finished as the third highest run-getter in the Challenger Trophy last year.

Mumbai has been producing talented cricketers for generations now. Jemimah’s record breaking knock in an Under-19 One-day tournament has paved way for a sure shot entry into the international team. The young talent has all the potential to go all the way.

  • At 13 Jemimah first held the bat for the U-19 side, and has two centuries in this tournament and averages over 300 in the U-19 Super Leagues. She and topped the batting charts after scoring close to 700 runs in 10 matches.
  • She has now honed her skill as a batswoman; she had started out as a bowler. Now, as a top-order batswoman, she normally opens and bats at number three.
  • The very versatile girl had also represented Mumbai at the U-17 level in hockey and has earned distinction.
  • During her domestic match against Saurashtra, she led her team to victory in 2017. The team scored 347 for two in 50 Overs with Jemimah’s personal contribution of 202 was touched just in 163 balls. Mumbai register a 285-run win. She put on a 300-run second-wicket partnership with Sejal Raut who scored 98 runs.
