Isaac Herzog wife: Israel's parliament Wednesday elected veteran politician Isaac Herzog as the 11th President of the Middle-Eastern country. "We must defend Israel's international standing and its good name in the family of nations, battle anti-semitism and hatred of Israel, and preserve the pillars of our democracy," he said in parliament, accepting his election, which comes only weeks after an intense renewal of conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The 60-year-old is the son of late Chaim Herzog, the former President of Israel. Since the beginning of his political tenure, Herzog has served many ministerial roles in his country. A lawyer by profession, he is married to Michal Herzog.

Michal Herzog will assume the role of Israel's First Lady, as her husband takes the presidential seat. She succeeds Nechama Rivlin in the role, who passed away in 2019 during her husband's tenure in office.

Following his election to the top role, Isaac Herzog thanked Michal, reportedly teary-eyed. "I will be everyone's president," he said.

Michal is a lawyer by profession as well. The Herzogs stay in Tel Aviv with their three sons.

In 2017, Michal made headlines for blasting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over a photoshopped photo of Herzog dressed like a woman on a campaign poster. "I’m sick of it. I’m sick of practicing restraint... When politics becomes slander, no citizen has to sit and take it… There are limits of good taste," local reports had quoted her saying then, in defence of her husband.

Vocal about her country's politics, she had further criticised Netanyahu, saying, "He picks one object or community or another and delegitimizes them. That’s exactly the issue."

Herzog's left-leaning leadership, experts say, will come as a sharp contrast to Netanyahu's controversial right-wing politics that have predominantly reigned in Israel since 2009.
