22-year Amini died on September 16 after she was detained by the morality police for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly and breaching Iran's strict dress code for women.

Fars news agency quoted a senior Iran police officer who said that the "new stage" of the Nazer-1 programme was being rolled out across the nation by the police.

The Nazer-1 programme was launched in 2020 amid concerns about the "removal of hijab in cars".

Mandatory Hijab In Cars

Under the programme, car owners would be sent a text message alerting them of a dress code violation in their car and warning them that legal action would be taken if the violation is repeated.

News agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that the police message read, "The removal of hijab has been observed in your vehicle. It is necessary to respect the norms of the society and make sure this action is not repeated".

In December 2022, Iran's prosecutor general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri claimed that the country's controversial morality police will be abolished according to local media reports.

However, conflicting reports and sceptics suggest otherwise as his comments appear to be a response to a question at a conference, rather than an announcement by the interior ministry.

Nationwide protests sparked after Mahsa Amini's death and spread to the international level. Violent crackdowns have taken place following the protests and some dissenters have received death sentences.

As of December 17, 2022, at least 469 people, including 63 minors were killed in the government's violent crackdowns.

The first death penalty to a protester was issued on November 14, on grounds of an offence which included disrupting the peace, setting fire to a state-owned building, and being involved in a conspiracy against national forces.

Till now, two men, both aged 23 have been executed over the protests and campaigners fear that dozens more risk being hanged.

A rights group said on Monday, January 2, that two Iranian teenagers face the death penalty after being sentenced to be executed for involvement in the protests.

18-year-old Mehdi Mohammadifard was sentenced to death and another protester, 19-year-old Mohammad Boroghani was sentenced to death.
