Indian Women’s Team Enters Finals In World Archery Championship

The Indian women’s archery team defeated Germany in the semi-final of the World Archery Championship, currently taking place in Mexico City. The women’s team will have a face-off with Colombia in the finals on Sunday (October 22).

In the compound women’s team semi-finals, the Indian team beat Germany with a score of 232-227. Indian players -- Trisha Deb, Lily Chanu Paonam and Jyothi Surekha Vennam -- gave their best performance and defeated Germany without much competition from the other side.

“We will shoot the same as today and try to win the gold. It will be our first time shooting against Colombia. They are good, so we are excited about it.”

The Indian team scored the highest per-match average in the tournament. Deb, Paonam and Vennam scored 232, 233 and 232 points respectively. With such scores, the Indian squad defeated Russia, Denmark and then Germany in the elimination matches on the Campo Marte to set up the summit clash.

“We are so proud of ourselves, it’s amazing to make the final,” Paonam said, Hindustan Times reported.

“We will shoot the same as today and try to win the gold. It will be our first time shooting against Colombia. They are good, so we are excited about it,” added Vennam.

Individually, both Paonam and Vennam made it to the under top-10 categories in the tournament. However, Deb finished 17th after losing in the third round.

Earlier in the same tournament, Paonam smashed 12th seeded Colombian Sarah Lopez in the second round of the competition. Sara made a score of 140 which Paonam beat by one point and scored 141 points. Now both will have a competition in the team match.

Chanu was a player of Manipur Archery Association which recently congratulated her and her compound team. It also wished her luck for the final encounter against Colombia.

The Indian team has only won silver medal in the four times that it reached the finals of the World Archery Championship.
