Modi signed the MoU during his visit to Myanmar on September 6. It essentially includes upgrading the Yamethin Women’s Police Training Centre. This will help the country’s government in expanding its police force with technical and financial assistance from the India government, the statement added, The Hindu reports.

This is the first time Modi visited Myanmar after becoming Prime Minister. He had earlier visited the country in 2014 to attend the ASEAN-India summit meetings. During his visit, Modi spelt out India-Myanmar bilateral relations.

Modi visited Myanmar after India-China Doklam stand-off. Myanmar is one of India’s strategic neighbours and shares over 1,600 km long border in north-east India.

Myanmar is also at the centre of the Rohingya crisis. Aung San Suu Kyi, who leads the Myanmar government, has been criticized for her silence over issue. About 4 lakh people from Myanmar have fled to Bangladesh. India has asked Myanmar's security forces to prepare for the safe and sustainable return of Rohingya Muslims to the country at UNHRC in Geneva.

"India remains deeply concerned at the situation in Rakhine state of Myanmar. It is important for the Myanmar security forces to handle the situation with restraint. And also focus on the welfare of the civilian population," an Indian High Commission statement quoted.

However, the Indian representative praised Bangladesh for extending support to such a large number of people.

"As a neighbour, friend and partner of Bangladesh, India has responded promptly to support the Bangladesh government in meeting the relief requirements."
