After reading reports about India being one of the worst countries in the world for women- a country that cannot guaranty the safety of women, a country that gives women  a low socio-economic status and a country where crimes against women are rampant; there is finally a reason to smile. According to a report by Times of India, India has more women in ministerial positions than most of its neighbouring countries.

UN Women and the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), jointly launched this year’s Women in Politics: 2015 Map at United Nations headquarters in both Geneva and in New York, on Monday. “According to the Map, the Americas maintains its lead as the region with the highest average of women MPs at 26.4 per cent with Bolivia the highest placed country from the region ranking No.2 in the world with 53.1 per cent,” reported India Blooms.

Even though India doesn’t figure in the thirty countries that currently have 30 percent or more women ministers, it has done fairly well, compared to the other Asia-Pacific countries. A press release by UN Women-IPU stated, “The snail’s pace of progress on gender equality and women’s participation in public and political life will need to be tackled head-on” for the overall success of the new sustainable development agenda taking over from the Millennium Development Goals this year.”
