Huchchamma Chowdri donated land worth one crore rupees to build a school and playground for children in Kunikeri Village of Haveri district in Karnataka. The old woman did not have any children of her own and worked as a cook for mid-day meals in the school.
Huchchamma Chowdri, an old woman in Karnataka donated her land worth one crore rupees to build a school and playground for children in Kunikeri Village of Haveri district. She owned two acres of land in the village and volunteered to provide her assets when the government was looking for land to build a school for the children of the village.
The villagers told that the value of land in the village shot up with growing metal manufacturers and the market value of Chowdri’s land reportedly came to be around one crore rupees which she donated all to build the school for the village’s children. She gave an acre of her land to the government for building the school and another acre to the school’s committee for creating a playground for the children.

As per reports, the old woman was very young when she married Basappa Chowdri. The couple had no children and continued to work on their agricultural land. After his death, she continued to work on her land while leading a simple life as a farmer. After donating all her assets for the welfare of the children, she worked as a cook for mid-day meals at the school. During the time of pandemic, when the school was shut, she continued to work on other fields of the village.
"What would I do with all that money? These kids will remember me forever, won't they? That is enough"
Huchchamma Chowdri said that she does not need the money for anything, rather she finds her happiness in the fact that children will remember her. She is referred as ‘Ajji’ meaning grandmother by the children of the village. “I didn’t give birth. But all these kids call me Ajji (granny). I feel extremely happy to feed 300 odd kids every single day. Why settle for one or two children when you can call 300 your own,” she said.
