Haryana Girl Stays Back In Ukraine To Look After Landlord's Family

Indian students in hundreds are stuck in Ukraine amid the war. While many of them have been asking for help in evacuation fearing the consequences of the war, a Haryana girl named Neha has decided to stay back and care for the family of her landlord.

As per reports, the 17-year-old Indian girl has been living as a paying guest with a Ukrainian family and is a first-year medical student. Her landlord reportedly joined the Ukrainian army to fight against the Russian attacks on the nation. He has three children and a wife at home and Haryana's Neha has decided to stay back and look after them in the landlord's absence.

In a statement to PTC news, the girl said, "I may live or not, but I will not leave these children and their mother in such a situation." The landlord is a construction engineer in Kyiv. Neha has been renting a room in his house as she could not get a hostel accommodation at her university. A friend of Neha's mother shared a post regarding the young student's decision to stand with Ukrainian family on Facebook. She wrote that Neha's landlord joined the army three days ago and his wife and children took shelter in a bunker with Neha.

The woman also shared the Neha's mother tried to evacuate her from Ukraine by getting in touch with the Indian embassy and was finally able to arrange for Neha's safe journey to India. However, Neha did not want to return and leave the three children and their mother alone in the time of crisis.

The post added, "Despite all efforts by her mother, the girl is adamant to stay there. I wonder what gives her the courage to stand by that family in these difficult times. She knows that she can also lose her life in these circumstances but she is more concerned about the life of the three small children than her own. She is more concerned about that mother who is alone with her children than her own mother."

According to reports, 249 Indian nationals were brought back to Delhi in an Air India flight from Romanian capital Bucharest on February 28. The Indians were reported to be started in Ukraine amid Russia's attack. India has reportedly evacuated a total of 1,156 Indian citizens from Hungary and Romania in five flights since Saturday.

SheThePeople spoke to Indian students still stuck in Lviv, a city in Ukraine. A first-year MBBS student named Shruti Prasad said that about 400 Indian students were still stuck in the country till Saturday. She said that the 150 students walked a the distance of 25 kilometres to a Polish border. After staying there for 12 hours, the students were informed that no pedestrians will be allowed to cross the border.

Prasad and her classmates made a video in which they sought Indian government's help and shared that they are running out of supplies.
