Gurpreet Kaur was a resident of Jaspur in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. She was married to Gurtaj Bhullar, Jaspur's block chief of the BJP party. She also had a daughter with Bhullar and was peacefully residing in her family home when an unexpected event took her life on Wednesday.
An exchange of fire took place between the locals and the UP Police after a police team from Moradabad travelled to the region to catch hold of a criminal who had a bounty of Rs 50000 on his head. It was alleged that the criminal was taking shelter at the BJP leader's house. During the time of the raid, a struggle broke out between the locals, police and the Bhullar family members. The exchange of fire between the police and the angry crowd led to Gurpreet's death owing to a gunshot wound.
Gurtaj Bhullar has alleged that his spouse's death is a result of a larger conspiracy and that he wants a CBI investigation into the matter. He told the media that his family did not use any sort of weapons during the scuffle and instead had handed over their weapons to the police. Reportedly, the Uttarakhand Government was unaware of the Uttar Pradesh Police's operation on Wednesday.
Bhullar was quoted by the news agency ANI, "I want justice. I appeal to the government for a CBI probe... If I'm at fault then I should be punished but a fair probe should be done."
The locals and the Bhullar family later caught hold of four people and handed them over to the police. Gurpreet Kaur's death has led to a huge public outcry in the region with angry protesters blocking the National Highway to demand justice for innocent Kaur's death.
