With Gina Carano Fired, Petition Emerges

As her remarks left Gina Carano fired, many fans trended #cancelDisneyPlus (where The Mandalorian streams) on Twitter. Simultaneously, those critical of the actor and MMA fighter's comments were trendinsg #fireginacarano.

A Change.org petition now claims that converging politics and entertainment isn't fair and that Carano, a fan favourite, shouldn't have been fired. "I'm not going to say she was right or wrong with her views, but firing celebrities over their political views has been happening way too often... The Mandalorian wouldn't be the same without her," it says.

"I'm not going to say she was right or wrong with her views, but firing celebrities over their political views has been happening way too often, and once again, Hollywood has struck down another conservative," the petition's author writes.

"What she said may have been a little extreme, and I can even see why some people may have been offended, but her tweet was not made to incite violence or to express discrimination or hatred of any sort to any particular group," the petition added.

SNL host Colin Jost, meanwhile, has taken a shot at Star Wars itself, following Carano's firing. He pointed out that the franchise couldn't be taken as the "authority on what’s antisemitic" since it comprised "Nazi propaganda" characters like Watto (considered deeply offensive and antisemitic) in the past.

What Did Gina Carano Say?

Gina Carano created quite a buzz with her Instagram stories where she compared the current pandemic and the need to wear double masks suggested by medical experts to Nazi Germany. She implied that asking people to wear a mask is like asking them to abide by a certain political view. She also said that Nazi soldiers in Germany did not kill jews but instigated the neighbours of Jews to kill them. Read more about the controversy here.

Gina Carano fired over Holocaust remarks

Carano has been in news repeatedly these past few months. She mocked COVID-19 mask mandates, and was accused of spreading conspiracies about the 2020 United States presidential elections. She has even disparaged the Black Lives Matter movement, and derided inclusive pronoun usage.
