Geena Davis:  A Champion Gender Activist

Back in 2004, Geena Davis, who is also a gender activist, founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which is a non-profit organization that researches gender representation in media and advocates for equal representation of women. She also founded the Bentonville Film Festival in 2015. Davis told Variety, “The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is dedicated to improving the representation in gender and diversity of talent, filmmakers, and business leaders by growing awareness through research, education, and advocacy. The Bentonville Film Festival is a critical component of how we can directly impact the quantity and quality of females and minorities on-screen and behind-the-scenes.”

A study by the Institute in partnership with J.Walter Thompson, shows that 53 percent of women globally think that there is a lack of female role models in film and TV. Eighty percent of women said that females should have a louder voice in influencing culture. The institute also found that the percentage of fictional women in the workforce is even lower than the one which exists in reality.

Also, Davis had partnered with Google to create the GD-IQ tool which helps analyze the content of ads and aggregate the data. Companies can analyse how much speaking and screen time women get, and also how they are portrayed.
