The horrific incident occurred on April 9 when two neighbours of the girl asked her to accompany them on their bicycle around 7pm. The girl was playing near her house at the time.

The accused have been identified as Jagdish (25) and Munna (24). They have been arrested and charged with rape and murder under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police told the Indian Express that the child was playing near her house when the accused accosted her. They told her to come with them for a ride and promised to drop her back home.

Pradeep Gupta, Kaushambi superintendent of police, stated that the accused lured the child to a secluded area, about 3 km from her house, where they committed the crime.

On Tuesday morning, the child’s parents found her body and informed police. The poor farm labourers looked for her all night when she did not return home. The girl has five sisters and a brother.

The girl knew the two accused as they belonged to the same village.

“After raping her, the two feared she would name them, so they murdered her. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of strangulation but we will know only after the autopsy reports are out.”

Such horrific crimes against children are rising by the day. When will we wake up to an India where women and kids can feel safe and secure?
