Flight Crew Helps Woman Deliver Premature Baby In Mid-Air
Recently, the crew in a Turkish Airlines flight got an unexpected surprise when a pregnant woman on board went into labour. The crew didn’t hesitate, but helped deliver the premature baby girl in mid-air.
According to NBC News, Nafi Diaby — who was 28-weeks pregnant —was flying from Conarky, Guinea, to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and got unpredicted labour pain mid-air, when the plane was 42,000 feet above ground.
The cabin crew instantly turned a section of the plane into a maternity ward and helped the pregnant woman deliver her baby.
One of the flight attendants, Bouthayna Inanir, said, “The mother gave birth while standing, and we received help from several other passengers,” India Today reports.
Soon, the Turkish Airlines shared the pictures on social media sites, posted selfies with the newborn who was wrapped in an in-flight blanket and tweeps started heaping messages of love.
The Facebook post captioned, “Welcome on board Princess!” was shared by many, got over 32,000 likes and the retweets count more than 19,000.
The baby girl later named as ‘Kadiju’, and her mother, were escorted to a hospital after the flight — Boeing 737-900 — made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso. Both mother and daughter are healthy, the airline said.
According to its website, Turkish Airlines allows pregnant women and in their 28th week to come on board, but conditions apply.
A Turkish Airlines statement said: “After the smooth landing of Boeing B737-900 type aircraft to the Ouagadougou airport, the mother Nafi Diaby and her newborn baby girl were taken to the hospital in order to be kept under observation for a while. Turkish Airlines’ Ouagadougou station officials reported that the baby and the mother currently do not have any health problems. And they also added that they’re still closely taking care of the mother and the newborn baby who [was] named as Kadiju, on their stay at hospital.”
