Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Facebook is hiring 3,000 people to work on its community operations team. The new employers will review images, videos and posts that users report. They will join the existing 4,500 employees who already vet content for the company.
“These reviewers will also help us get better at removing things we don’t allow on Facebook like hate speech and child exploitation,” wrote Facebook CEO Zuckerberg.
The move comes soon after the April 16 murder of Robert Goodwin in Cleveland. A man had uploaded a video on Facebook in which he stated his intent to murder. Two minutes later, he uploaded a video which shows him shooting Goodwin. And after that, he posted live on Facebook for five minutes.
Facebook automates some of its censorship processes. But technology is not enough to determine quality of content and manual assistance is needed.
“The problem will eventually be solved when computers can reliably determine the content and context of video. For now, a human touch is needed,” Zuckerberg wrote. He also wrote that Facebook will make videos easier to report.
“And we’ll keep working with local community groups and law enforcement who are in the best position to help someone if they need it — either because they’re about to harm themselves, or because they’re in danger from someone else,” he wrote.
The company is hiring more people than the combined newsrooms of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, according to Popular Science.
