Namrata Jain

Like many entrepreneurial journeys, Namrata Jain’s was also born from a challenge that she faced and then wanted to solve for everyone. She had always been fond of decorating her home – and not just in a big bang, once-in-a-while renovation kind of way, but rather curating and collecting things over time, piece by piece. This led her to start Home Artisan, a design-centric brand that carefully designs and curates home décor objects.

“While the amount of choice available to us in this space has expanded exponentially over the past few years," she says, "it’s actually become harder for us as a consumer to make a choice – just the sheer number of options available is paralyzing. So I felt the need to change that – we don’t want to offer our customers a thousand designs in the hope that they’ll like 2 or 3 – rather we want to offer them the 5 best ones that they’ll love.”

Born and brought up in Delhi, Namrata has had different careers - currency derivatives trading, business research, and consulting. She asserts that entrepreneurship is where she has found her true calling.

“People want global trends and they want them at the click of a button – which is exactly what Home Artisan’s value proposition is.”

“In the last five years, I have observed that a lot of people have become a lot more conscious of their home’s aesthetics, and demanding too. They want to lead a modern lifestyle, one that’s comparable to developed countries – and they don’t want to wait for last year’s rejects to arrive at our shores. They want global trends and they want them at the click of a button – which is exactly what Home Artisan’s value proposition is.”

Namrata believes that a home should be a reflection of the people living in it. Just by looking at a space one should be able to tell about your interests and passions. So the first step towards personalizing a space is identifying one’s own passion and design aesthetic. If you surround yourself with things you love or feel connected to, then your home will become your happy place.

Having said that, the entrepreneur’s experience in this field has also been fraught with its own share of hurdles. She informs, “Definitely the usual suspects – lack of time and resources to tick off everything on a never-ending to-do list, our country’s archaic rules and regulations, and such an absolute lack of work ethic in the unorganized sector. But I think the biggest challenge has been keeping our focus – there are so many options and so many directions in which we could go, that we have to be very selective about what we do and, more importantly, don’t do. We actually spend more time deciding on the things we don’t want to do. That’s our ethos and that’s the culture I am trying to build – meticulous, considered, and focused.”

But, for now, the entrepreneur is enjoying the journey of building the Home Artisan brand and meeting people’s expectations, she says, “I just want to keep on building on this – adding more categories, expanding into more markets, but retaining our core ethos of design-centricity and customer service.”
