Gilbert had announced her relationship with the musician in September last year. Elias is terminally ill, and was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic and liver cancers, shortly after which Gilbert entered into a relationship with her.

They celebrated their love in a private ceremony, surrounded by a handful of friends and family.

“A simple and spontaneous ceremony of love, surrounded by a small handful of friends and family. Our ceremony was nothing legally binding (no need to alert the authorities, folks!)...just a quiet and private celebration of what we have long known to be true: We belong to each other,” said Gilbert on a post on Instagram.

Elias’ illness had progressed over the time that they had been together. “More difficult days are to come,” she said.

“We will walk together as far as we can go together. After that, it all gets turned over to God.”

Elias has been Gilbert’s best friend for over 15 years.

Gilbert announced the ending of her marriage with Jose Nunes in the same post in which she announced her love for Elias. She said that her feelings for Elias became apparent after she learnt of her disease, and this brought about the end of her marriage with Nunes. Nunes had been featured in 'Eat Pray Love' and her memoir, 'Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage'.
