Women have proved that they were never made to be confined to the norms of society. Over the years, they have contributed considerably to science, mathematics, politics and literature despite various obstacles that society threw their way. Recognising the efforts of women in the field of science, International Day Of Women In Science is celebrated on February 11 every year. This year, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, addressed the students at the Rama Devi Women's University, her alma mater, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Droupadi Murmu On Gender Equality

Talking about women’s contribution to society, President said, "Gender discriminations that created social disparities have been shattered. Be it politics, defence, space science, technology, sports, literature, music or arts, women have excelled in every realm of life. For the first time in the history of Parliament, there are more than 100 MPs".

On her two-day visit to her hometown Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj, the President shared her life experiences and how the college helped her become the human being she is today. She reportedly said, "I managed with the food sold by hawkers just outside the college boundary. Getting a handful of groundnuts at 25 paise was good enough for me. I was happy".

She attended the second convocation ceremony and handed doctorate degrees to four female students from different fields of study. She called the college a place where everyone was treated equally and was overwhelmed by the love she received. While she was leaving in her car, she saw some girls waiting to greet her anxiously. Seeing them, she got off her car to meet them and shook their hands.
