1982-batch IPS officer, Geeta Johri, on Tuesday become the first ever woman police chief of Gujarat. She replaced P P Pandey as the state’s top cop.

Pradeepsinh Jadeja, the minister of state for home, announced Johri’s appointment stating that since she is the seniormost IPS officer in the state, she was being given additional charge.

Johri was appointed after Pandey’s sudden resignation from the post following a petition against him in the Supreme Court. He is also one of the main accused in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

Johri has been working as the managing director of Gujarat Police Housing Corporation in Gandhinagar. She played a controversial role in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati encounter cases. When CID got involved in the case at the command of SC and started investigation in 2006-07, she played an active role in the investigation as she was the supervisory officer of the Sohrabuddin encounter case at that time.

It is important to know that the central probe agency chargesheeted Johri allegedly for messing up with the investigation after the case was transferred to CBI. The CBI also alleged that “under her supervision, she projected that the third person abducted along with Sohrabuddin and Kauserbi was one Kalimuddin and not Tulsiram Prajapati”.

The CBI also alleged that “at the instance of the Minister of State (Home), Gujarat, she gave illegal instructions to the I.O. (investigating officer) who was investigating the crime,” reported Indian Express.

However, Johri was absolved of all the allegations in the case in 2015 after she moved a discharge application before the special CBI court in Mumbai.
