According to the police, the victim was in a long-distance relationship with the accused man, Gurpreet Singh, and flew to India as Singh asked her to visit him.

The Victim and Crime Scene

Nina Berger, a 30-year-old Swiss national, met a tragic end with her decomposed body discovered near the wall of a municipal school in West Delhi's Tikal Nagar on October 20, 2023. Her limbs, eerily tied with metal chains and securely locked, painted a harrowing picture of the brutality she endured.

The post-mortem findings, conducted by a panel of doctors from DDU Hospital, attributed her death to "asphyxia caused by constriction of the neck... by an iron chain" and "assisted by masking of the face... by a polythene bag."

The accused found amusement in Berger's futile attempts to free herself, as she struggled for approximately half an hour before succumbing to her fate.

Swift police action led to the arrest of Gurpreet Singh, a 33-year-old resident of West Delhi's Janakpuri, just a day after the grim discovery. The thousand-page charge sheet, filed in a city court on January 11, unequivocally points to Singh as the sole accused in the heinous murder of the Swiss woman.

According to the comprehensive charge sheet, the primary motive behind Nina Berger's murder was a sinister financial dispute between Singh and the victim. The accused allegedly demanded a staggering sum of around Rs 7 lakh from the Swiss woman. The charge sheet sheds light on Singh's background, revealing he and his father were engaged in the business of stones and gems. A chilling revelation arises as the police disclose that Singh, despite only completing Class 8, was allegedly the mastermind behind the elaborate plan to extort money from the victim.

Complicating matters further, the charge sheet discloses suspicions surrounding Singh's father, who is now a fugitive. Authorities have issued a lookout circular (LOC) against him as he becomes a person of interest in connection with the murder.

The charge sheet also hints at a forthcoming legal battle for Singh under the Arms Act. The discovery of four firearms at his residence has prompted authorities to initiate proceedings in a separate case, further deepening the legal quagmire surrounding the accused.
