The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has raised concerns about the quality of river water in Prayagraj during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. A report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) reveals that high levels of faecal coliform bacteria have been detected in the water at locations where thousands of devotees are taking holy dips.

"Increase In Fecal Concentration"

According to the CPCB, the river water at Prayagraj has failed to meet the primary quality standards for bathing due to excessive faecal coliform (FC) levels. The report highlights that pollution levels were high at all monitored locations during the event.

"River water quality was not conforming with the primary water quality for bathing w.r.t. Faecal coliform (FC) at all the monitored locations on various occasions," the report stated. It further added, "A huge number of people are taking baths at Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh Mela in the river, including auspicious bathing days, which eventually leads to an increase in faecal concentration."

Concerns Raised in NGT

The report, dated February 3, 2025, was submitted before the Principal Bench of the NGT. The bench, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, along with Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Expert Member A. Senthil Vel, is hearing a plea filed by Varanasi-based Advocate Saurabh Tiwari.

Tiwari's petition raises concerns about water quality in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj. The bench is also looking into allegations that untreated sewage is being discharged into these rivers during religious events like the Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela.

What is faecal coliform?

Faecal coliform bacteria are found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, including humans. They serve as indicators of potential water contamination, as their presence suggests that harmful pathogens, such as viruses, parasites, and other bacteria, may also be present.

Faecal coliform is commonly tested in water quality assessments to determine whether water is safe for drinking, swimming, or other recreational activities.

The presence of faecal coliform bacteria in water poses serious health risks. Exposure to contaminated water can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and more severe infections. This makes it essential for people participating in the Maha Kumbh Mela to be aware of the water quality before taking a dip.

With thousands of devotees gathering for the event, authorities may need to take urgent steps to ensure public health and maintain water quality in the sacred rivers.
