Anusuiya Uikey Is The New Governor Of Chattisgarh

Uikey has held several pertinent positions in MP state government in her tenure of over 30 years long political career.

President Ram Nath Kovind announced that Bhartiya Janta Party’s Anusuiya Uikey has become the new governor of Chhattisgarh today. The 62-year-old Uikey has been representing Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha or the upper house in the Indian parliament. The appointment will take effect from the date she assumes charge of her office, said a press communiqué issued by Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Apart from Uikey, President Kovind also appointed veteran BJP leader and former minister from Odisha, Biswa Bhusan Harichandan as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Uikey has held several pertinent positions in MP state government in her tenure of over 30 years long political career. She was first elected as the member of Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in 1985 then she went on to become the Minister for Women and Child Development between 1988 and 1989. She became a member of National Commission for Women in 2000 and continued as a member for five years. In January 2006, she joined the Madhya Pradesh State Commission for Tribals as a Chairperson which she served for only two months. In 2006 she was again elected as the member of RS after which she became a member of Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.

In the same year, she also joined as the member of Committee on Health and Family Welfare, Hindi Salahkar Samiti, Ministry of Food Processing Industry, Ministry of Women and Child Development and Informal Consultative Committee for South East Central Railway Zone.

According to her profile on Rajya Sabha website, Uikey has taken special interest in the delivery of justice to women, especially tribal women and solution of their problems; worked for awareness of rights of tribal women leading to their empowerment.

Her association with BJP goes a long way as the party fielded her as a candidate from Damua and Lakhnadaun legislative assembly constituencies in the 1993 and 1998 elections. Within the party also, she has held important positions as during 1993 – 1997, she was State Secretary of BJP. Uikey has also been the National Vice-President of BJP Yuva Morcha and Executive Member of BJP Adivasi Morcha.

In 2018, Uikey came in the news for praising the work of them CM of MP Kamal Nath who belongs to the Congress party. Uikey was the vice chairperson of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes then and after she praised the work of Kamal Nath, she claimed that Congress spread rumours of her joining the party. She had said then, “The Congress should apologise to me. There are rumours being spread on social media that I would be joining the Congress because I praised his work. I had also praised Chief Minister Shivraj Singh CChouhan’s work in the state. This is the Congress’s way of practising petty politics. It is a way of conspiratorial politics.”
