Chennai: Cab Driver Intrudes Homes To Sexually Assault Residents

In the Irumbuliyur area near Tambaram, concerned residents raised an alarm by filing a police complaint, alleging that a man had been engaging in suspicious activities. They claimed that he not only spied on houses in the vicinity but had also subjected some women to sexual abuse at knifepoint. On Tuesday, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Chennai for intruding into homes and harassing women who were alone inside. The residents further alleged that this individual had resorted to sexual abuse using a knife to intimidate the victims.

Identified as Tamizh Prabhu, a cab driver, the Selaiyur police arrested him, reported The Indian Express. He was charged under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to outraging the modesty of women, and The Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Subsequently, Prabhu was remanded to judicial custody.

According to the police's investigation, residents of MES Street, Murugan Street, and Veerabathiran Street near Irumbuliyur in Tambaram had lodged a formal complaint, citing instances of an unidentified man behaving suspiciously around their homes, especially during odd hours. They accused him of trespassing into houses where women were residing alone.

Responding to this complaint, the police initiated a case and began scanning CCTV footage. They identified a man scaling the wall of a house and hastily leaving the premises. A special police team was assembled, and they alerted the public to be vigilant in capturing the suspect. On Tuesday morning, residents spotted the individual in the Irumbuliyur area, apprehended him, administered physical retribution, and subsequently handed him over to the police.

The incident serves as an important reminder that the safety of women cannot be taken for granted anywhere, not even in the sanctity of their own homes. We must collectively strive to make sure that this fundamental human right is protected, particularly for those women who have chosen to live independently.  What's even more distressing is that, in this particular case, the perpetrator happened to be a cab driver, granting him convenient access to their residences.
