Twitter and other social media platforms have been ordered to remove the video of two Manipur women being paraded naked as the matter is under investigation. Sources stated that the videos were inflammatory as the matter was being probed.

Police stated that cases of abduction, gang rape, and murder had been filed at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district against "unknown armed miscreants."

A video of two tribal women from the Kuku community being paraded naked by a group of men on May 4 surfaced online late Wednesday, 19 July. According to reports, the women were among five women abducted by a group of men during violence in the northeastern state. The video has sparked massive public outrage.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has reportedly also warned social media platforms on compliance with new IT rules that reiterate freedom of expression with “reasonable restrictions”.

The sources reportedly stated, "It is imperative for social media platforms to adhere to Indian laws as the matter is currently under investigation."

Smriti Irani, the Union Women and Child Development Minister, tweeted that she spoke with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh about the incident and called it "commendable and downright inhuman."

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday broke his silence on Manipur violence. He said his heart is full of pain and anger over the “shameful” incident, and what has happened to these daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven and no culprit will be spared.



Modi urged all chief ministers to further strengthen law and order in their states and take strictest steps to protect women.

As the monsoon session of the parliament begins today, the parliamentary Affairs minister, Pralhad Joshi, said that the government was ready for a discussion of the ethnic violence in Manipur.
