Manmohan Singh: State Funeral With Full Military Honours For India's Former PM

The Government has decided to allocate space for a memorial to honour former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Ministry of Home Affairs said.

India mourns the loss of its former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday, December 26 due to age-related health issues. AIIMS New Delhi confirmed the news, stating he breathed his last on Thursday night. Known as the architect of India’s economic reforms and a symbol of integrity, his demise has left the nation grieving. The Government has decided to allocate space for a memorial to honour the former Prime Minister, the Ministry of Home Affairs said on December 27.

Manmohan Singh Funeral

A seven-day national mourning will be observed as a mark of respect. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India, the Union Home Ministry said. The last rights are underway with full state honours at Delhi's Nighambodh Ghat crematorium on December 28. Several politicians attended the funeral.

According to The Hindu, the mortal remains were earlier kept inside the All India Congress Committee headquarters with top leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge paying their respects. Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters placed a wreath on his body.

The slogans "Manmohan Singh amar rahe" and “Jab tak suraj chand rahega, tab tak tera naam rahega” were chanted on the way to Nighambodh Ghat. Rahul Gandhi also accompanied the procession alongside Singh’s relatives. The procession carrying reached the crematorium at around 11.30 am.

Celebs Remember Dr. Manmohan Singh's Legacy

Several celebrities took to social media to express their heartfelt condolences. Actor-director Kamal Haasan posted on X, saying, "India has lost one of its most eminent statesmen and scholars. The passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh marks the end of an era in Indian polity. His governance was marked by a deep commitment to inclusivity and social justice, ensuring India's progress reached every corner of society."

Madhuri Dixit shared her tribute on Instagram Stories, stating, “Dr. Manmohan Singh's journey and service to the nation reflect true wisdom and grace. His leadership reminds us that quiet determination can move mountains. My deepest condolences to his family and countless loved ones. Om Shanti.”

Sunny Deol also paid homage via Instagram, calling Dr Singh a “visionary leader” and writing, "His wisdom, integrity, and contributions to the nation's growth will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences. #RIPDrManmohanSingh."

Swara Bhasker also paid tribute on X by sharing a picture of Dr Manmohan Singh presenting her with honour. Dressed in a white saree in the photograph, Swara wrote, “The demise of #ManmohanSingh ji, who (looking back) presided over India’s actual ‘Acchey Din,’ feels like the end of an era when India was actually (more) democratic when Indians were free(er) of fear & intolerance, and when Indian public discourse had more decency. Farewell, Dr. Singh. You gave India more than you got credit for.”

Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh shared a simple yet heartfelt tribute with a picture of Dr. Singh, captioned, “Oh Waheguru (folded hands emoji).” 

Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma shared a throwback picture with the former Prime Minister and wrote, "India has lost one of its finest leaders today. Dr Manmohan Singh, the architect of India's economic reforms and a symbol of integrity and humility, leaves behind a legacy of progress and hope."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief, stating, "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and prime minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years."
