This is what a Presidential candidate in the United States of America had to say about the mother of a Muslim soldier who died in the line of duty. The soldier’s father had chosen to say a few words in public about his son and their religion, to explain the fact that Islam does not teach terrorism. But instead of appreciating the heartfelt speech, Donald Trump trolled the soldier’s mother, suggesting that Islam does not allow women to have their say.

In response, thousands of Muslim women talked their hearts out on Twitter, using the hashtag #CanYouHearUsNow.

Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad with Team USA said: “My religion, my faith, they are a part of who I am and I have never felt the need to explain it anyone.”

She was joined by Muslim scholar Tamara Gray, who said: “I am a woman and I am a leader.”

Added Yemeni winner of the Nobel Prize Tawakkol Karman, “Together, we will build a New World.”

Dr Suzanne Barakat, whose family were shot in a hate crime at Chapel Hill, put the blame for such crimes squarely on Trump. “These hate crimes are increasing at an unprecedented rate and soon Mr Trump will have blood on his hands because of what he says,” she said.

Male chauvinists, watch out. Women do speak – and they speak very well.
