In Saran, Bihar, a bride and groom distributed helmets to twenty-one guests that had come for the procession on stage and gave a message regarding road safety.

The bride Baby Kumari is a resident of Jamanpura village and the groom Vikas Mishra is a resident of Chaukhra village. Mishra said that the newlyweds hope to save a life and promote road safety.

The bride’s uncle, Mahungu Dubey had passed away in a road accident on the Chainpur-Rasulpur road four years prior. After the incident, Kumari took an oath that she would welcome the wedding processions by presenting them with helmets.

The newlyweds Baby Kumari and Vikas Mishra said that their choice to present guests with wedding helmets was inspired by Delhi Police Head Constable Sandeep Shahi.

The Police Head Constable Sandeep Shahi is also known as the helmet man. Shahi had become famous for distributing free helmets to traffic violators. He has distributed more than 1100 helmets in Delhi. Originally from Saran, Shahi was protected by a helmet during a road accident in 2014. He grew concerned by the increasing number of casualties on the road.

He attempted to raise traffic awareness and a video of him rapping to an edited version of “Apna Time Aaega” that raised awareness about traffic violations went viral.

Sandeep Shahi also took the initiative to provide 51 people with helmets as a gift during a wedding in his district. Shahi inspired similar awareness campaigns in his village Devapura, and in other districts including Chhapra, Sivan, Patna, Raipur, Bilaspur, and Ayodhya.

Baby Kumari and Vikas Mishra are not the first to newly married couple to gift helmets to the gifts.

In 2017, Nashik’s Priyadarshana Sabhadra and Rushabh Gogad distributed helmets to more than 500 wedding guests. Priyadarshana’s father Rajendra Sabhadra got the idea after seeing the city police’s pro-helmet campaign. He mentioned that guests that did not drive two-wheelers could give the helmet to someone who required it.

The commissioner of police Ravinder Kumar Singhal also presented the helmets to the wedding guests.
