What do you expect an octogenarian to do? Sit back, and enjoy her retired life? However, that’s not what 82-year-old Bhagawati Oza, settled for. A practising gynaecologist from Vadodara, the wonder woman bagged a gold medal at the Masters National Aquatic Championship in Mysuru on Wednesday.

Proclivity towards adventure sports

Adventure sports has always been Oza’s calling card. She was 65 when she took to competitive games.

“I love sports and as a medical professional, I used to accompany the mountaineering expedition teams to the Himalayas. Not many liked being in the mountains for months together, but I loved it,” said Dr Oza.

Besides swimming, she loves scuba diving and white water rafting too. She has pedalled through the length and breadth of the country.

Interestingly, she was trained by famed mountaineer Tenzing Norgay.  She is also the recipient of the national award for sports and adventure last year.

She also completed an expedition from Kolkata to Kanyakumari covering nearly 3,000 km on cycle. Following this, she went on another expedition from Vadodara to the Wagah border.

“I go on such expeditions almost every year,” she added.

Her fitness routine

She wakes up at 4 am every day and hits the exercise floor to sweat it out for nearly half an hour. A few years ago, she had injured her back due to which she has to work harder to keep herself fit and fine.

Life’s mantra

Her buoyant attitude towards life stems from the following mantra – Learn to live with nature, follow your heart, and be a good citizen by following the rules.

Bhagawati Oza’s intrepidity is inspiring. She has proved that it is never late to chase passion and happiness.
