PM Narendra Modi will meet Sheikh Hasina, who is also the first South Asian leader he will be meeting after the recent state elections. And it will perhaps be Hasina’s last visit before her term ends and she starts preparing to campaign for the upcoming Bangladesh elections.

“This visit comes seven years after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s last visit to India in January 2010 and almost two years after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in June 2015,” said a foreign ministry statement, reported Livemint.

Hasina’s visit was finalised for April after getting postponed twice in December and February. She will be coming to Delhi first and meeting key officials at leadership levels and then she will head to Ajmer. Her purpose is to take the friendship to another level and ink more deals with the country.

One of the important deals she is focusing on is the water sharing deal but since 2011 West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee, has been against India signing the pact. The Centre is trying to strike a deal on this matter by making a few altercations that are agreeable to both parties. Another deal that both the countries are looking forward to discuss is the maritime security cooperation, which may be both bilateral as well as under the rubric of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

Indian foreign secretary S Jaishankar recently visited Dhaka and talked about this deal and returned with a positive outlook. “There has been excellent implementation of decisions taken during the visit of the Prime Minister of India to Bangladesh in June 2015,” said a statement issued at the end of Jaishankar's visit, reported TOI.

“Both sides also took stock of decisions taken during the recent meetings of various bilateral mechanisms in the areas of security & border management, trade and commerce, power, energy, shipping, railways etc,” the statement further mentioned.

It is essential to see how India and Bangladesh have always gone out of their ways to accommodate each other’s requests. Bangladesh has undoubtedly been India’s most successful alliance with a neighboring country. However, some ground-level problems still remain.
