The final decision rests with the House of Representatives, where the matter will pass its last test, by the end of the week.

With this legislation becoming a law Australia will be the 26th country to allow same-sex to marriages.

Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, said that same-sex marriage would be made a reality by end of the year. Almost 80% people voted on the postal ballot. Turnbull also told the Parliament that he was ‘consistently in support of legalising same-sex marriage.’

While the chamber debated upon a bill to legalise same-sex marriage, on Monday, an Australian MP proposed to his gay partner in the Parliament, who said “yes.”

Tim Wilson, 37, an openly gay member of the Parliament with the centre-right Liberal Party, held back tears during a speech in which he spoke about the emotional struggles that he and his partner, Ryan Bolger, had to undergo as a gay couple.

Wilson and Bolger had been engaged for nine years when Wilson finally popped the question facing his partner and asking him to marry him, who broke into a broad smile and mouthed ‘yes.’

The couple was congratulated by all MPs by a rounding applause. The Deputy speaker, Rob Mitchell, even asked to record the ‘resounding yes’ in the parliament’s official records of transcripts.

The bill was passed in the Senate, or upper house, last Wednesday, without any amendments. It was followed by a debate addressing the question of whether or not it provided sufficient provisions for religious freedom.

Wilson’s proposal created yet another history. The officials from the House of Representatives told on Twitter, that he was the first member of parliament to have ever proposed in the chamber.
