“The chancellor regrets the US government’s entry ban against refugees and citizens of certain countries,” Merkel’s spokesman said. “She is convinced that the necessary, decisive battle against terrorism does not justify a general suspicion against people of a certain origin or a certain religion.”

According to the spokesman, Merkel has “explained’ the obligations of the Geneva refugee convention to Trump over a phone call. According to the Geneva convention signatory states are obliged to take in war refugees on humanitarian grounds.

She will also be examining the consequences of the ban on German citizens with dual citizenship.

Trump has banned any person from Syria, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the country for the next four months.

Merkel is known for welcoming more than a million refugees into the country.

Leaders from other countries have also condemned Trump’s move. The U.K’s Prime Minister, Theresa May’s official spokesman said that Britain does not agree with the ban. But this was only after she declined to condemn the order three times on Saturday, and after being questioned for her decision to push ahead with her state visit to the US.

French President Francois Hollande also spoke to Trump over a phone call on Saturday. He spoke about the importance of supporting and welcoming refugees.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, went so far as tweeting his support for refugees. To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength,  he said.
