Dwindling Oxygen Supply in Hospitals
The COVID-19 situation in India has taken a turn for the worst. The country is now bracing with a surge in COVID-19 cases, as well as the problem of oxygen shortage for COVID-19 patients in hospitals. India has now registered over 3 lakh new COVID-19 cases on Thursday which is the highest single-day rise till now.
Several COVID-19 patients in India have been forced to lie on hospital pavements for their treatments due to a shortage of hospital beds, medical supplies, etc. Several states have already reported that they are facing a severe shortage of oxygen . Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla wrote to the chief secretaries of all states asking them to take measures to prohibit the supply of oxygen for industrial purposes. Now the available oxygen will only be redirected towards COVID-19 treatment.
A hospital in Delhi said that it is awaiting a fresh supply of oxygen by tomorrow afternoon. "We have received oxygen supply from Inox and have also purchased oxygen cylinders from a private company. At present, we have oxygen supply, but we don't know if we will get a fresh supply by tomorrow afternoon. We are waiting to see what the suppliers say," said Dr JP Singh, Medical Superintendent, Tirathram Shah Charitable Hospital, New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Max Hospital Patparganj moved to the Delhi High Court saying that it was facing a severe oxygen shortage. Then in Uttar Pradesh, five patients died allegedly due to oxygen shortage. Families of several COVID-19 patients protested against the prevalent oxygen shortage problem at the Shivaji Chowk area in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
