Army Lieutenant Dies By Suicide In Ambala, Husband Arrested For Dowry Death

The family of the deceased alleged that the accused's family moved to Ambala soon after the marriage and started taunting her for not giving them a car or cash as dowry.

Ambala Dowry death: The Police arrested a 32-year-old squadron leader of the Indian Air Force on Tuesday after his 29-year-old lieutenant wife allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Ambala. The deceased woman's family has accused the squadron leader and his family of dowry harassment.

The lieutenant who worked in the Military Nursing Services of the Indian Army reportedly hanged herself at the residential quarters of the Indian Air Force during the night intervening Sunday, June 20 and Monday, June 21. The couple's house has been sealed by the Air Force Police and her autopsy was conducted at the Military Hospital in Ambala.

The arrested squadron leader has been identified as Navneet Sharma and is posted in Ambala, said Ram Kumar, who is the DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) at the Ambala Cantonment. He further said that Sharma would be produced before the court on Wednesday, 23 June.

According to The Times Of India, the deceased, who has been identified as Sakshi (29), was a mother of a two-year-old boy. She had married Sharma in December 2018, in an inter-cast alliance.

A police case has been registered at the Ambala Cantonment police station on Monday against Navneet Sharma, his mother Lakshmi Sharma, father Chetram Sharma and brother Mohit Sharma, on the complaint of Sakshi's brother Saurabh under Sections 304-B (dowry death) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). All four of them are residents of Pinjore in Panchkula, Haryana.

The family of the deceased alleged that the accused's family moved to Ambala soon after the marriage and started taunting her for not giving them a car or cash as dowry. Her brother also alleged that his brother in law was always suspicious of his sister and had even installed CCTV cameras in their own bedroom.

Inspector Vijay Kumar, the Police in charge at the Ambala Cantt met the woman's family and said that the police will try to retrieve the footage from the lab.
