Aiming for bullseye: Three archers headed for Rio

Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi are the three archers who who will be participating in individual and team events in archery at the Olympics

The women who will represent India in archery at the Rio Olympics to be held later this year have been selected. Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi are the three archers who have made the cut, who will be participating in individual as well as team events. The three –member team was finalised after a series of trials over the past three and a half months, and finally the confirmations came in on Monday. This is the first time the women’s team got selected for the Olympics this year and the men’s team could not make the cut.

The selection process was a long procedure including six stages and training session in the last over three months. It began in January in Jamshedpur, and then came to Delhi, finally ending in Bengaluru. The team was selected by the Archery Association of India, as reported by News 18. The three women won three individual seats and one team quota because of their tremendous performance at the World Championship last year, which was held at Copenhagen.

The team of Kumari, Devi and Majhi last played at the Archery World Cup held at the Yaunshen Stadium, Shanghai.  Although they won against the top seed Germans, but lost against Taipei, China and hence returned with a silver medal.
