Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi was imprisoned for the last 18 months and was recently allowed by a court to step out of the jail on parole to visit his mother and teenage son. He was arrested in December 2019 for his alleged role in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

The 45-year-old chief of the Raijor Dal was escorted by a special police team. Gogoi is at present lodged in Guwahati Medical College Hospital. The police will bring him back after the visit.

"We had sought permission as Gogoi’s son, who is 14 years old, had contracted Covid-19 and his mother hasn’t been keeping well," Gogoi’s lawyer Shantanu Borthakur said, "His son has recovered now."

Gogoi said to the reporters outside his residence before leaving for Jorhat that he could not sleep at all as his son is sad and was disturbed. He spent the entire night with him.

Gogoi's mother Priyada, 84, played a crucial role in his conquest from the Sivasagar seat in the 2021 assembly polls. Despite her old age, she campaigned for her son resulting in a victory for Gogoi who could not even visit his constituency.

Regarding his victory, Gogoi said, "With folded hands, I thank the people of Sivasagar," expressing gratitude for electing him from behind bars and creating history. He assured that he hopes to be free soon, following which he will serve them.

The NIA probed two cases against Gogoi in connection with the anti-CAA protests. One was related to Chandmari in Guwahati and the second was related to the Chabua police station in Dibrugarh. Gogoi was charged with provisions of the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act by the NIA.
