5 Indian Star Women in Forbes World's Billionaires List

The Forbes list of world’s richest people is out and features 190 women billionaires, approx. over 10 per cent of the total count last year. Five Indian women have successfully made their names enlisted.

Indian women in this year’s Forbes billionaires list has increased over last year, when there were only two Indian women included.

Savitri Jindal:

Among the Indian women who made it to the list, Savitri Jindal, the Chairperson of Jindal Steel & Power Limited, a Minister in Haryana Government and member of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, with her family was ranked at the 453rd place on the list with a net worth of USD 3.5 billion (Rs 23,639 crore), down from $5.3 billion in 2015.  After a five-year decline, Ms. Jindal’s O.P. Jindal group companies, which she chairs, has seen a loss of USD 10 billion due to a downward slide in shares.

Indu Jain, who currently chairs media conglomerate Bennett, Coleman & Co, which owns the Times of India and other large newspapers, was on rank 549 globally. She sits on the list with a $3.1 billion (Rs 20,937 crore) fortune. Ms. Jain is an entrepreneur, an educationalist, a spiritualist, a humanist, a sponsor of art and culture, and also founder President of the Ladies wing of FICCI. Being a pioneering activist in the field of development, she actively reinforces women's rights and the encouragement of entrepreneurship.

Smita Crishna-Godrej:

Among others on the list shows Smita Crishna-Godrej who has a net worth of USD 2.2 billion  (Rs 14,859 crore), which brings her at 810th rank on the list. Smita is industrialist Jamshyd Godrej's sister and is married to Vijay Crishna, who is a director on the board of Godrej Industries Limited. By virtue of a one-fifth stake in the family assets, Smita is the new entry to the list.

Leena Tewari:

Newcomer on the billionaires list, low profile heiress Leena Tewari, who chairs privately held Indian generics maker USV Pharma a drugs for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. She's at 1067 position with a net wealth of USD 1.7 billion (Rs 11,482 crore).

Vinod Gupta:

Another noted name that made it to this is Vinod Gupta who stands at rank number 1577 with a USD 1.1 billion fortune. After her husband Qimat Rai Gupta’s death in November 2014, who was an entrepreneur, former chairman and managing director of Havells, she took over the responsibilities and husband’s shares in electrical firm Havells India. Unfortunately, she made a status jump this year down from $1.2 billion in 2015.

Globally, the grand dame of L’Oréal, Liliane Bettencourt and her children were ranked at the top. Alice Walton who ranked 16th with assets of USD 32.3 billion and Jacqueline Mars at 27th rank with USD 23.4 billion.
