The 10-year-old rape survivor who was forced to carry her pregnancy to term gave birth on 17th August. Now DNA tests show that the man accused of raping her -- her uncle -- is not the baby’s father. This leads to questions as to whether she was raped by multiple men.
The girl’s uncle was charged with raping her over a period of seven months. The girl had even clearly named him as the abuser and had given details of what had happened to her.
The girl’s mother had said that they did not suspect anyone else.
There will now be a new DNA test to ensure that there was no error in the first time. The surveyor is unaware that she is the mother of a child. She received counselling during her pregnancy, but just thought that she was unwell. When she went to the hospital to deliver, she had told her parents that there was a stone in her stomach. The baby was born, and the girl’s father has asked that the baby girl be adopted. Authorities will take care of her till the baby is adopted.
The girl had told her mother about the rape when she was already in her third trimester. The parents asked a district court to terminate the pregnancy, but the plea was rejected. They then petitioned the SC, but the eight-member panel denied termination on the recommendation of the eight-member expert panel.
The eight-member panel of doctors, who ranged from psychiatry to gynaecology and paediatrics, examined the girl. The girl was 32 weeks’ pregnant, and the medical report said that aborting then would be too risky.
The abortion law doesn’t allow termination after 20 weeks unless doctors confirm that abortion will not endanger the mother’s life.
