Do you fail to pay attention down there? Well, maintaining vaginal health is essential for overall well-being. However, infections, hormonal changes, and poor hygiene can invite discomfort and unpleasant odour down there. Embarrassing right? This article sheds light on the signs of an unhealthy vagina, following simple hygiene and lifestyle tips can help prevent infections and promote long-term wellness.
A healthy vagina is essential for overall well-being, reproductive health, and comfort. The vagina has a natural balance of bacteria and pH levels that help keep it clean and infection-free. However, various factors such as poor hygiene, infections, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits can disrupt this balance, leading to discomfort and health issues.
A large number of women fail to pay attention to their vaginal health and suffer from concerning problems such as yeast infections (candidiasis), bacterial vaginosis (BV), and trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection). Recognising the signs of an unhealthy vagina is crucial for seeking timely medical attention and maintaining good vaginal health.
Watch out for these signs of an unhealthy vagina
- Unusual vaginal discharge: Any sudden changes in colour, consistency, or smell could indicate an issue down there. Thick, yellow, green, or foul-smelling discharge may be a sign of infections such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is imperative to consult an expert without any further delay.
- Constant itching or irritation: Vaginal itching can be caused by yeast infections, bacterial infections, allergies because of certain chemical-laden products and soaps, or even sexually transmitted infections. If itching is there even after following good hygiene down there, it may require medical evaluation.
- Foul odor: A mild vaginal odour is normal, but a strong, fishy, or foul odour, especially after sex or menstruation will be the warning sign of bacterial vaginosis. Persistent odour changes should not be ignored at all.
- Pain or burning during urination: can indicate urinary tract infection (UTI), yeast infection, or STI. If accompanied by frequent urination or lower abdominal pain then it is better to consult the doctor.
- Discomfort during sex: Vaginal dryness, infections, or underlying health conditions such as endometriosis can cause discomfort or pain during intercourse. Report to the expert to be able to determine the exact cause of discomfort and pain.
- Redness and swelling: Inflammation around the vaginal area can result from infections, allergic reactions to personal care products. Be attentive when it comes to your vaginal health.
- Irregular or heavy bleeding: Spotting between periods or excessively heavy menstrual bleeding can happen due to hormonal imbalances, fibroids, or infections.
- Rashes, sores, blisters, and bumps are also potential signs of vaginal infections.
Tips to maintain vaginal health
- Wash the vaginal area with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water.
- Avoid douching, as it disrupts the natural pH balance.
- Wear cotton undergarments to prevent bacterial growth and avoid synthetic fabric.
- Stay hydrated by drinking enough water to maintain natural lubrication and vaginal health. Opt for probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt to maintain a healthy vaginal flora. Avoid excessive sugar intake, as it can lead to yeast infections.
- Use protection to prevent STIs. Moreover, remember that regular STI screenings are also important. Say NO to scented soaps, sprays, and wipes that can irritate down there.
- Also, go for regular check-ups with the gynaecologist and don’t miss the screenings, such as Pap smears to ensure early detection of potential issues.
