Placenta previa is a type of condition that occurs when the placenta tends to cover the cervix either completely or partially. As cervix is the opening of the uterus, placenta previa can often cause severe bleeding during the pregnancy. This can increase the risk of several complications during the delivery.  It usually happens when the placenta attaches lower than usual. Various factors, like previously having C-sections, multiple pregnancies, or abnormally shaped uterus, can altogether contribute to this condition. It becomes crucial to stay vigilant and be aware of the vital symptoms associated with placenta previa.

The symptoms can mainly include spotting after intercourse, heavy bleeding, feeling early contractions, cramps, pain in the lower abdominal area, dizziness, and fatigue. The mild cases of placenta previa can be resolved as the uterus expands, but during the severe cases, one may require medical monitoring or a C-section. Detecting this condition at an early stage can help manage this condition while ensuring the safety of both the mother and the baby.

What Every Expecting Mother Should Know About Placenta Previa?

Early detection is crucial: Placenta previa can be easily detected during the routine ultrasounds, mainly in the second trimester. If it is diagnosed at an early stage, then doctors can easily monitor it and recommend the treatment options along with preventive measures to eliminate the risk of severe complications.

Heavy bleeding: Since the cervix is completely or partially covered with placenta, any type of sudden movement or excessive pressure can cause bleeding. The bleeding can range from mild to severe. Bleeding can often occur during the second or third trimester. The bleeding can be painless or even happen without any warning signs.

Strenuous activities should be avoided: Those expecting women who are diagnosed with placenta previa should not indulge in any type of intense activity. This can include activities like lifting heavy weights, strenuous exercises, running, or intercourse. These activities can put extra pressure on the placenta while increasing the risk of bleeding. Complete bed rest can be recommended for those with severe cases.

Vaginal delivery is usually not an option: The chances of vaginal delivery decrease if the placenta persistently covers the cervix even as the pregnancy progresses. Opting for vaginal delivery with placenta Previa can increase the risk of severe bleeding, which can put both the mother and baby at the risk of suffering from numerous life-threatening complications.
