First omicron case in US: The United States reported its first case of omicron in California. The person infected had been double vaccinated. On December 1, the White House announced that scientists continue to study the risks posed by the new coronavirus variant.
The person infected had returned to the United States from South Africa on November 22 and tested positive seven days later. This is the first known case of Omicron in the United States. This was announced by the White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients. He also said that the best way to limit the spread of COVID-19 is by getting vaccinated, masking and distancing.
According to the top US infectious disease official Dr Anthony Fauci, the infected individual experienced mild symptoms and was in self-quarantine. On the other hand, Rochelle P Walensky, who is the director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that the US has increased genomic sequencing to 80,000 samples a week.
Omicron has been found in other countries like Canada, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Israel. In just a day, South Africa reported double the number of new cases from this new variant.
The new variant was first identified by scientists in South Africa. The first case of omicron that they found was in Botswana, a landlocked country in the southern part of the African continent.
Since then worries about the new strain has taken over the world, with countries ramping up their testings and vaccination processes. Another way of making sure that the spread of this new strain is contained, countries are revamping their international travel plans including India. Around 56 countries have implemented travel measures to guard against Omicron.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said, "Blanket travel bans will not prevent the international spread and they place a heavy burden on lives and livelihoods." The WHO also suggested the postponement of any international travel plans of people above 60 years and unvaccinated people.
No cases of omicron have been reported in India so far.
