Payal Kapadia
In a groundbreaking moment, Payal Kapadia became the first Indian filmmaker to receive the esteemed Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 25, for her film All We Imagine as Light. The film's team, including Payal and cast members Chhaya Kadam, Divya Prabha, and Kani Kusruti, attended the festival and accepted the award during the closing ceremony.
In her winning speech Payal said, “This film is about friendship between three women and oftentimes, women are pitted against each other. This is the way society is designed, and that's really unfortunate. But for me friendship is a very important relationship because it can lead to greater solidarity, inclusivity and empathy towards each other. So, which is why these are the values I feel that we should always strive for.”
