Fierce, Fiesty, Fabulous: Our Take On Top Characters Of 2024

2024 didn't fail to keep us entertained and hooked. The year witnessed lots of interesting dynamic characters- both on the big screen and OTT platforms. They were fierce, humorous, self-determined and courageous. Some characters inspired us, while some resonated with us.

Here are the top characters of 2024 that stood out for us.

Tashi Duncan from Challengers

Zendaya's character took the internet by storm in Luca Guadagnino's film Challengers. The cherry on top? The method dressing adopted by Zendaya and her stylist Law Roach during the press tour of the movie. Director Luca Guadagnino really showed Tashi as a master manipulator who knew how to push people’s buttons. Tashi wasn’t a hero or villain; she was layered with complex themes of broken aspirations, love, betrayal, and ambition.

Jaya from Laapataa Ladies

Laapataa Ladies

The revolutionary Jaya, who saw the potential in organic farming way before it was a trend, tops our list of characters from 2024. Jaya is a feisty woman aspiring to study organic farming and leave a mark in the field but is forced to marry against her will to a man with a possible violent history. She subtly and very maturely reminds us how gendered norms prevent women from thriving and how in the rush of taking care of their households, women frequently forget to become friends.

Sachiv Ji from Panchayat 3

Panchayat

Jitendra Kumar’s portrayal of Abhishek Tripathi, affectionately called Sachiv Ji, in Panchayat has quickly become a fan favourite since the show’s debut. As a government official from the city trying to navigate the often absurd realities of rural life, Jitendra’s performance continues to resonate with audiences. What stands out about his performance is the delicate balance he strikes between humour and emotional depth, which has made Sachiv Ji one of the most beloved characters in 2024's streaming world. But, we are left again on a cliffhanger if he clears the Common Admission Test exam or not.

Jana from Stree 2

Abhishek Banerjee’s comedic brilliance as Jana in Stree made him one of the most loved side characters in Bollywood’s horror-comedy genre. Returning with Stree 2, Abhishek’s quirky antics, hilarious reactions, and on-point timing are back to entertain audiences. His chemistry with Rajkummar Rao’s character and his endearing (and sometimes bizarre) fear of ghosts had viewers laughing out loud. In the sequel, Jana’s character arc sees new dimensions as the town once again faces the supernatural entity.

Elphaba from Wicked: Part 1

The year ended on the right note. Cynthia Erivo's character of Elphaba, alongside Ariana Grande's potrayal of Glinda, stood as a symbol of self expression and courage. We come across the reasons why Elphaba is considered evil, as societal perceptions and circumstances force her to act in ways that are deemed villainous. Elphaba is a strong character with high moral standing who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes is right- even it involves getting painted as "The Wicked Witch of the West".

Bibbojaan from Heeramandi

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi saw Bibbojaan,  played by Aditi Rao Hydari, as a complex character who enters Heeramandi with innocence and vulnerability but grows into a woman full of desires, ambitions, and moral dilemmas. Hydari’s performance has been widely praised for its emotional range and subtlety. Bibbojaan’s internal struggle between love, duty, and ambition makes her a fascinating character who adds to the emotional depth of the show. Her famous 'Gajagamini' walk was the talk of the Internet for quite a while.
