The universe of The Big Bang Theory is growing thanks to a spin-off from the show's creator. The news was released on Wednesday, April 12th, as part of a Warner Bros Discovery press event, which also saw the firm reveal details about its new platform Max, which is a rebranded merger of HBO Max and Discovery+.

Chuck Lorre, who together with Bill Prady co-created the original Big Bang Theory series, will be creating the new program for Max. The plot specifics, however, are currently being kept under wraps.

The Big Bang Theory, which aired for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019, starred Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons as two physicist buddies, with Kaley Cuoco as Penny, their next-door neighbour. The untitled spin-off will develop from the original 12-season sitcom in a second way.

The spin-off series will be Lorre's second overall deal-related endeavour with Max and WBTV. He is now working on the Max Original comedy series How to Be a Bookie with actor Nick Bakay (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), which also stars comedian Sebastian Maniscalco (The Irishman).

Young Sheldon, a CBS prequel sitcom to The Big Bang Theory that centres on an Iain Armitage-played nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper, is now in its sixth season.
