Movies and television shows have, over the years, have made us form an unrealistic idea of sex. The seeds of partial information sowed through these shows about sex have made it somewhat uncomfortable for us to witness true-to-life moments of intimacy. However, the concept is being demolished by the sex-positive shows which are making up for a lack of good sex education.

The new shows have made an admirable effort to normalise various aspects of sexuality, such as identity, consent or safer sex. Besides calling spade a spade, they have paved the way for inclusivity on with powerful LGBTQIA+ characters and bringing forth queer issues.

Here are the sex-positive shows to learn a thing or two:

Sex Education

The British comedy-series follows the story of a socially awkward teenager Otis Milburn. Taking notes from her mother’s professional knowledge of a sex-therapist he begins an underground sex clinic with his schoolmate Maeve. Together they resolve their peers’ coital concerns in exchange for cash. The show gradually delves into the subject matters like masturbation, impotence, abortion, sexual harassment and LGBTQ relationships in an informative yet entertaining manner.

Christiane Amanpour: Sex & Love Around The World

The docu-series has an award-winning journalist Christiane Amanpour travelling six cities—Tokyo, New Delhi, Accra, Berlin, Beirut, and Shanghai—to talk to women about their sex lives. In the six-art series she meets regular people and confronts the cultural taboos that surround sexually empowered women.

 

Sex, Explained

The limited docu-series narrated by Janelle Monáe, as the name suggests, explains the the topic of sex. It delves deep into the trends and nuances of it while talking about birth control, fertility, attraction, childbirth and sexual fantasies.

Wanderlust

The six-episode British series follows a psychoanalytic therapist Joy and her husband Alan who explore the new definition of fidelity. After a series of events that affected their marriage, the couple initiates open marriage to rebuild their happy relationship.

Big Mouth

The animated series revolves around best friends Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg and tackles the subject of puberty. Big Mouth explores concepts such as body positivity, shame, and consent, making us wish we had this sex education while growing up. The taboo topics are dealt with juvenile humor and makes women part of it as much as men.

 

Atypical

The coming-of-age story follows Sam Gardner, a 19-year-old on the autism spectrum, who decides to start dating which would need him to be independent. The central theme of the series revolves around the idea of being normal.  Over the seasons, Sam could be seen facing the pressures of growing up amid the affairs, breakups, and coming-out moments.
