The much-anticipated cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic Ramayana has officially unveiled its first look, promising a visually spectacular retelling of one of the world’s oldest and most revered stories. Helmed by filmmaker Namit Malhotra and co-produced by Yash, the project brings together a powerhouse creative team, blending Indian mythology with global filmmaking excellence.
A Mythological Universe for the Global Stage
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana reimagines the ancient tale as a grand, multi-part cinematic universe rooted deeply in Hindu tradition while crafted for a worldwide audience. The teaser, which debuted across social media platforms, opens with a majestic introduction of the Hindu trinity, Lord Brahma (the Creator), Lord Vishnu (the Preserver), and Lord Shiva (the Destroyer). It sets the stage for an epic cosmic battle when divine creation is threatened, introducing Lord Rama as the central force of righteousness and virtue.
The teaser features stylised visuals, dramatic narration, and sweeping scores, giving fans a glimpse of the scale and gravitas that await.
“Ten years of aspiration. Relentless conviction to bring the greatest epic of all time to the world,” read the makers' note while unveiling the teaser on Instagram. “Let’s celebrate the immortal story of Rama vs Ravana. Our Truth. Our History.”
A Myth Meets Modern Fantasy
Fans were quick to draw comparisons between the teaser’s opening sequence and Game of Thrones, noting similarities in the thematic music and stylised introductions. The music is a collaboration between Oscar-winning maestros AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer, sets a tone that is at once spiritual and cinematic, evoking mystery and awe.
While Ramayana stays rooted in Indian spiritual heritage, its treatment, scale, and narrative grandeur are prompting global comparisons to Western fantasy epics.
Star-Studded Cast & Global Crew
The film brings together a stunning ensemble cast:
Ranbir Kapoor as Shri Ram
Yash as Ravana
Sai Pallavi as Sita
Sunny Deol as Hanuman
Ravi Dubey as Lakshman
Behind the scenes, Ramayana boasts contributions from Hollywood’s top stunt coordinators like Terry Notary (Avengers, Planet of the Apes) and Guy Norris (Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa), who are designing the large-scale war sequences. The sets and landscapes of ancient India are being designed by Ravi Bansal (Dune 2, Aladdin) and Ramsey Avery (Tomorrowland, Captain America).
A Two-Part Global Release
Produced by Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with Monster Mind Creations, and with VFX by the eight-time Oscar-winning studio DNEG, the film is being shot for IMAX format and will be released in two parts: Part 1 is set for Diwali 2026, and Part 2 to follow in Diwali 2027.
With this ambitious project, the Indian film industry aims to present Ramayana not just as a religious text but as a timeless tale of good versus evil, love, duty, and sacrifice, poised to resonate with audiences around the world.
