Priyanka Chopra Controversies: The year 2021 has been quite a busy time for actor, singer and entrepreneur Priyanka Chopra. She recently starred in one of the Matrix sequels, The Matrix Resurrections and has been promoting the film on all fronts. Apart from introducing her own brand, shooting for both Hollywood and Bollywood films, roasting her husband Nick Jonas on a Netflix show, Chopra has also been replying to the various controversies created around her.
The actor was suddenly in news for a rumoured separation from her husband and singer Nick Jonas. The controversy was that she dropped Jonas from her name on social media platforms. The actor’s mother came to her rescue as she clarified that dropping Jonas does not mean she is separating from her partner. Chopra was also trolled for marrying Jonas, who is years younger than her and she gave the trolls a befitting reply on the show, Jonas Brothers And Family Roast on Netflix.
The actor has always spoken her mind and in various interviews talked about getting power from these trolls rather than them pulling her down. “It’s crazy, you have to take away the power from the trolls. Otherwise, if I started giving importance to that, I would not be able to live,” she said in an interview.
Here are ten-time that Priyanka Chopra coolly fended them off rather than indulging in banter:
1. Trolled For The Matrix Resurrections
The actor was trolled for her short screen time in the much-awaited film The Matrix Resurrections. In the film, she played the role of Sati and the movie was released on December 22 this year. In an interview with Asian Sunday Tv, the actor said that whether it be Bollywood or Hollywood, she never chose roles on the basis of its screen time. She said, “I am not very myopic when it comes to my characters, especially not The Matrix!”
2. Her Choice Of Outfit
Chopra was trending in February this year for wearing the orb dress designed by Halpern Studio. The social media erupted with memes on the dress and actor. While she played a sport by commenting, “Too funny…Thanks for making my day,” on a few of such memes. However, a Twitter user wrote, “Are you serious Ma’am, is that a dress then what’s the point to having a good figure?” To which Chopra replied, “The fact that a “figure” doesn’t matter (emojis) that’s the point (emojis).”
3. Met Gala Outfit
In 2018, the actor went to the Met Gala wearing Ralph & Lauren trench coat gown and was immediately ridiculed by netizens in form of memes and how ridiculous the outfit looks. The actor posted on her social media saying, “**drumroll** to your creativity! I’ve picked a few of my favourites! Good to know that the dress serves more purposes than just fashion. Hope to continue to stir your creative juices. This is why I love the #MetGala you literally can push the envelope for fashion anywhere! Until next time… #ROFL.”
4. Age Gap Between Jonas And Her
As soon as the news of Jonas and Chopra marrying had gotten out, she was criticised for her age difference with Jonas. The memes called her mom, aunty, amongst other things and the actor said, “I find it really amazing when you flip it and the guy is older, no one cares and actually people like it.” She also spoke about this in the Netflix show, where she said, “Nick and I have a 10 year age gap, we do and there are many 90 pop culture references which he doesn’t understand and I teach him, which is fine because we teach each other things. He showed me how to use TikTok for example. And I showed him what a successful acting career looks like.”
5. Is This What You Wear To Meet PM Modi?
The actor got a massive hit back on a picture she shared with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The actor was wearing a dress and the netizens trolled her for not dressing appropriately and showing off her legs. Chopra’s reply to the trolls was simple, she posted a picture of her with her mother Madhu Chopra. In the picture, both mother and daughter were wearing the dress and Chopra captioned it, “Legs for days… #itsthegenes with @madhuchopra nights out in #Berlin #beingbaywatch.”
6. Oscar Nominations
An Australian entertainment journalist tweeted whether Chopra and her husband Jonas were qualified to present the Oscars nomination in 2021. In the same year, Chopra’s film The White Tiger was nominated. Replying to the tweet, Chopra mentioned her IMDb film credits list and wrote, “Would love your thoughts on what qualifies someone. Here are my 60+ film credentials for your adept consideration.”
7. Wife of Jonas, Really?
The actor recently posted a story on Instagram pointing few media publication houses referring to her as ‘wife of Nick Jonas’ as her credentials on a story about her film The Matrix Resurrections promotional event. Chopra wrote, “Very interesting that I’m promoting one of the iconic film franchises of all time, and I’m still referenced as ‘the wife of…’ Please explain how this still happens to women? Should I add my IDMB link to my bio?”
8. Marriage Stunt
Chopra’s marriage with Jonas was in news for a long time and netizens trolled her for marrying someone so young and called the marriage a publicity stunt. In the Netflix show, she said, “Since we got married, people questioned our marriage. They were like ‘Oh! it’s a publicity stunt.’ How could it be? I didn’t even know how famous he was? All I knew was that he’s Kevin’s baby brother.”
9. Plastic Chopra Controversy
The actor’s memoir Unfinished came out this year, in its promotional activity, an interview with Elle talked about her plastic surgery and how the blotched surgery left her horrified and a blow to her self-esteem. She also talked about the press calling her “Plastic Chopra.” She said, “I was dared to give an explanation for the obviously different nose, but I chose a course then that I’ve followed in all the years since. I decided that there was a line I was going to draw in my life. I am an entertainer. That’s what I’ve signed on to do, and that’s what I love doing.”
10. What’s In The Name?
The premature conspiracy theory on whether Priyanka Chopra dropping Jonas from her social media name is a sign of her separating from her loving husband was shot down by many on the internet, including Chopra’s mother. In an interview with ETimes, Chopra said, “I don’t know. I wanted the username to match my Twitter, I guess. I just find it really amusing that everything becomes such a huge deal to people. It’s social media, guys. Just chill out.”
