Priya became well-known overnight thanks to her song Manikya Malaraya Poovi from the 2019 Malayalam movie, which included a wink and flying kiss. In response, a lawsuit was brought against the director of the movie and Priya for offending religious sensitivities. Priya described how she became known as a "wink girl" following her film Oru Adaar Love before making her Bollywood debut. She claimed that because she was only 18 at the time, she was unable to deal with the surrounding noise.

Priya Prakash Varrier recently discussed her experiences with "trolls, memes, and nasty remarks" in an interview with News18. "When I started out, a big blowup happened. The noise around my wink was something that was totally out of my control or power. I didn’t even get enough time to process what was happening. By then, trolls, memes and hate comments had already started," she said.

"Initially, it was a little hard to adjust to whatever was happening because as an 18-year-old outsider, I had no one guiding me or telling me the things that I should do or not do and how to deal with such a situation. When you face so many things so early on in your career, they tend to take a toll on you and there’s a lot of self-doubts that come with it," Priya Prakash Varrier said.

The actor continued by saying that at first, it was "tough" for her, but over time she learned how to handle "trolls and hate comments." Varrier, 22, claimed that people perceive celebrities more like "public properties" than like public figures, but that it is not appropriate for anyone to say whatever they want about celebrities. People "can't cancel" stars, she claimed.

Varrier also stated, "It’s definitely been tough for me initially but over time, I got used to trolls and hate comments and learnt to ignore unnecessary things. These things are a part and parcel of our profession and all actors go through bullying and trolling on a daily basis… People forget that we’re as human as they are. They perceive us as public properties as opposed to public figures. As actors, all of us put ourselves a little bit more out there than the rest of the population. But you just can’t say whatever you want to about us; you can’t hate us or cancel us."
