Skater Girl Netflix film: As the Indian-American film is set to be released on the OTT platform on June 11, here is all you need to know about the first Bollywood film that revolves around the story of a girl's passion for skating.

Set in the rural districts of Rajasthan, the film is claimed to be the first to narrate a story on skateboarding. Manjari Makijany's Skater Girl smashes patriarchy and exposes the limits on the rural women who are restricted from participating in simple activities like skating.

  • Directed by the Los Angeles based writer, director and producer, Makijany made her directorial debut feature with the tribal set film.
  • The film which began its filming back in 2019, is also named a Desert Dolphin. Productions began under this former title of the film.
  • Skater girl features Rachel Sanchita Gupta, who is a newcomer in the world of acting, in the role of Prerna who will go against the odds to gain success in her career of skating.
  • The film also features veteran actor Waheeda Rehman as Maharani. Other cast members include Shafin Patel, who is also a newcomer, Amrit Maghera, Jonathan Readwin and others.
  • Written by Manjari and Vinati Makijany, who also co-produced the film under the Indian production company Mac Productions, the film released its trailer on May 14, attaining a major fan base globally.
  • Initially set to be released in 2020, the film is a coming of age sports drama that built Rajasthan's first and India's largest skatepark in Khempur.
  • In a conversation with The Telegraph, Makijany said on her film, "it (Skater girl) is so unconventional, it’s a story about skateboarding in India. There are several skate communities in India that are thriving."
